Topic: A Day in the Life of a Divorce and Family Law Attorney
I have to admit that I'm enjoying my life so much right now that I didn't watch the Oscars like I've done for the last I don't know how many years. So this morning, of course, it's all over the news about Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. I talked about this in my personal blog and about John Mayer too. But I couldn't help but wonder how this case would go in a New Mexico Family Law Court if Brad and Angelina ever split up. Since they are not married, it would definitely be a case under our Uniform Parentage Act, except that if Brad adopted the three oldest kids, then he would be treated as their natural and adoptive father too.
I also thought about the amount of child support that would have to be paid for the children here in NM if this case were to happen here. Our NM Child Support Guidelines don't list the amount of income that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt make.
It would definitely be an intersting, fascinating and complex case given all of the aspects of this international couple. But for it to happen here in a NM Family Law Court, one of them would have to have residency here with the children for at least six months before any filings were made in Court.
It's back to the real life divorce and child custody cases right here in New Mexico, which are my favorite kind of cases. I enjoy working with my clients and helping them get through such a difficult time in their lives. I'll let you know if anything interesting happens tomorrow. Felissa
