Topic: A Day in the Life of a Divorce and Family Law Attorney

Hi Alexis. In response to your blog, post, Lawyers are required to keep our clients completely informed on what is happening on your case. I am blessed that I have a large staff and I work very hard to keep our clients informed about their cases. Sometimes, your lawyer could be busy on another case, or in trial. That's a really hard situation for us as lawyers to deal with when we have our other clients who need our attention. I would call your lawyer's office and leave a message asking for an update on your case and give the lawyer a deadline by which he or she must respond.

I can tell you that a lawyer refusing to return calls or emails to the client, whether him/herself or through his assistants or paralegals, is not acceptable. In this type of situation, I suggest writing a serious letter to your attorney. If your lawyer has a supervisor, write a letter to the supervisor.

Finally, if your lawyer refuses still to respond, give you an update or work on your case, you need to hire a different lawyer. When you are interviewing the lawyer, ask him or her what their policy is on returning calls and on keeping the client updated on the case. I am so sorry to hear that you are having problems with your case. To me, one of the most frustrating issues in custody cases is when mothers think they can dictate the timesharing from the fathers and they think they can withhold children just because they are the moms. This is the worst issue in custody cases, as far as I'm concerned. It's just not fair.

Give me an update when you get a chance and I hope everything works out for you.  Felissa M. Garcia
